Screws to replace Marine Band nails
Hi Kinya,
I am currently planning on customizing my Marine Band (replace the nails and seal the comb) harmonica. Now my question is, can you suggest what screws I can use for replacing the nails? I have also read some information on the internet and they usually suggest 0-80 3/8" machined stainless steel screws... can I use this size on the cover plates as well as for the reed plates? or do i need a different size for the cover plates? I have noticed in my SP20 that the outside screws (holding the cover plates, reedplates and comb) is much bigger than the ones inside the cover plates.... many thanks in advance for your help! and please pardon my grammar and spelling as english is not my main language.... again many thanks and enjoy the rest of your day!
Hello Audrey,
Yes, you can do without the drill press--for now. As you get more and more into this Harp-Tech stuff, building your workbench tool inventory will be a good time saving and quality work investment. In the meantime the Micro Mark #82110 Deluxe Pin Vise will hold all the drill bits and tap needed for your project. Keeping things straight will be your most frustrating challenge, but it will work ;o)

Kinya,
Can you elaborate as to where I can find this Harp Tech Study (Marine Band 101A)? I can't find it, and I am very interested in learning to do this.
Thanks,
Ken
David and I are in the process of scheduling the filming for Marine Band 101A. It will be well worth the wait! Topics include:
> Strategies for removing those pesky nails
> Drilling/threading for 0-80 bolts
> Rounding off the mouthpiece (comb) tines
> Proper comb sanding techniques
> Application of sealer and finish
> Size reed plate slots
> Flatten draw reed plate
> Create proper reed profiles and offsets
> Tuning
> Assembly
Stay tuned!

Can someone tell me the best way to remove the nails from the reedplates to the comb on a Marine Band without doing damage to the wooden comb? I want to replace the nails and seal the comb. Carlos Bandana
Thanks Eddy, that is exactly what I needed to help me out! Appreciate the heads up. Tom
I look forward to watching Kinya's method (especially on the use of the hammer ;-) )
seems a great tutorial Kinya, I'm so glad you and David are taking the trouble to put it on video, thombs up!

Hi Kinya;
You specify up above: "Tap wrenches to hold the TAP bit: #83146 (best)..." I searched Micro-Mark with that number and got search results of a slew of unrelated items.
Hi Mainmark, check these out:

Hello Audrey,
Fun project. Here is your shopping list from www.micromark.com
* 0-80 x 3/8' brass bolts #70189 round head, or #70191 for hex head (strictly a matter of taste)
* 0-80 nuts if you choose not to tap threads into the bottom draw reed plate, and the four 0-80 nuts you will need to secure the cover plates
* 1/16" drill bit (most hardware stores will have this) is used to enlarge the top blow plate nail holes and comb holes (including the cover plate holes that will use the same nail holes)
* 0-80NF x #55 Tap Drill (#14145TD) is used to prepare the bottom draw reed plate nail holes for tapping threads
* 0-80NF Tap (#14145T) is used to cut threads into the bottom draw plate nail holes. This will set up your harmonica so that you do not to require those little pesky little 0-80 nuts
* Tap wrenches to hold the TAP bit: #83146 (best) because of its versatility of being used as a miniature drill press, #15126 (good) or #20130 (least expensive)
* If you do not have a drill press to hold your drill bits, the #82110 Deluxe Pin Vise is very handy
Harp Tech Studies "Marine Band 101A" will demonstrate in great detail the entire process. In the mean time, have some fun. Let us know how it goes!
