THE SEAL OF APPROVAL...
Strange things happen when the gasketing of the element in a harpmic (or any mic) fails or is inadequate to start with, and none of it's good.
We've discussed the need to isolate the back and front surfaces of CONTROLLED-RELUCTANCE / CONTROLLED-MAGNETIC elements from each other, that unlike your typical crystal and ceramic elements they are "live" to both sides and ne'er the twains should meet -as feedback is sure to follow. Be aware that the gasket's purpose in a crystal-equipped mic will also help safeguard the cartridge from impact damage and handing noise. Candidates for replacement are the die-cut foam gaskets found in ASTATIC T-3 models. If it sounds like a maraca when you give it a shake, it's time for a gasket upgrade. NEED HELP? GOT QUESTIONS? Let me know...
Fritz, great job on these weekly tips, thanks so much for doing them! I like your stories from the bench... actual customer fixes, very cool. I know a lot about mics, but I always come away with something from reading your tips. Keep em' coming!
