Sequencing ?????
Hello David
Could you explain how to play a G7 lick(holes 1thru4)for the one chord, then going up to hole #4blow to turn same lick into a C7 lick? This confuses me? The lick may sound higher(???)and rhytum and interval structure are the same(???)but isn't the melody DIFFERENT? What am I missing here? Could you explain alittle in detail? Thx for what you do! John
Hello John.
You found one of the limitations of sequencing to the IV7.
If the lick is fast enough, we can use 2+ or 5+. For example... 4-dip 4+ 3' 2 on the I7 could be played as 2-dip 2" 2+ 1+ and generally sounds okay. In this case, the 3'/2+ is a passing tone, and it's played fast, so the substitution works.
If the 3' is a central note on the I7 (it's held), the same substitution doesn't commonly work.
You have some of options...
1) Repeat the I7 lick over the IV7 - In some cases this works fine. Take "Green Onions" or "Help Me" (which have a similar bass line) for example. The lick is 2 2 2 3' 4+. When the IV7 comes, even if the band sequences, you can still play the lick, because it's the 5th 5th 5th flat-7th Root of the IV7.
2) Try changing that note to something else (or a couple of notes, to make the variation possibly work)
3) Improvise over the IV7... do something completely different
4) Try another position... 1st or 3rd position may work better
My pleasure
Hello John.
Here’s the lesson on sequencing (Section 3) https://www.bluesharmonica.com/lessons/music_theory_study_4_melodic_deve...
To understand sequencing requires some basic music theory knowledge... when studying this lesson if you run into some terms that are not making sense, study the previous Music Theory lessons to bring you up to speed.
