Sheet metal vice grips
Kinya I would be interested to know your reaction thoughts to using sheet metal vice grips for setting the zero point on the whole reed plate rather than a vice. The tension can be preset to an appropriate pressure
Harpsmith, do you not use your machinist vise to set them all anymore? That was so elegant in the video. Did you find that it doesn't work as well as the brass lined flat pliers?
Hi Millman, yeah it was pretty cool. The problem with doing all ten reeds at the same time, was that I lost positive control over the upper octave (shorter reeds), stressing and breaking reed #10 ;o(
I am far more comfortable setting the zero point on an individual reed basis.
Hey... maybe you can be the person to create an affordable press and die tool that will safely set all ten reeds at the same time.

Hey John, I'm thinking using sheet metal vice grips to set the zero-point of our tender little brass reeds will be a little like, the Dentist using a Roto Hammer Drill to prepare the tooth for a filling. Both would be a tad excessive!
I do like the sheet metal vise grip (lined with non-stratching leatherette) to shape the back folds of the Hohner Marine Band 1896 cover plates.
