Shell's Rhumba
I used a Jimi Lee Backing track for this - it's a rhumba in G played in 2nd position on a C harp. Some of it is a reworking of the instrumental I submitted for the Chorus Froms lessons. I've tried to use a range of chorus forms and vary each one - some are rhythmic, some melodic, some have long notes, some have short notes, etc. The only problem I had was with the volume of the backing track - ideally, I would have liked to bring the band down on the last chorus before the head returns ... but it's not my band! The backing track stays pretty intense throughout. I went with a rhythmic repetitive chorus instead hoping that that would have the same 'calming' effect after the ABC chorus before it.

Chorus 1: Focus note: 2"
Chorus 2: Focus note: 3

Judging
CH1 - Head... very nice ideas and use of space
CH2 - Head with variations... VERY nice us of 5+ on the IV Chord
CH3 - A little bluesy (2") for a rhumba, but I buy it / nice turnaround
CH4 - Great transitions in to chord change / Nice Chorus Form usage
CH5 - Nice long 4, it was welcome here / nice hand usage / Killer IV, I like how it was short and choppy, in contrast to the A lick / Nice AA B/A C Chorus Form
CH6 - Great texture 2/5 and raunchy IV Chord / Great V-IV-I Lick
CH7 - Nice octave jumps, really nice in this section of the song
CH8 - Head
SUPER well done, FANTASTIC use of space... space made your other licks sound even better. Great Chorus Form use other elements... dynamics, texture, range, duration, etc.
Thanks
Thanks, David! The improvising lessons have been a huge help, really helping me to think about song structure and all the subtelties I would have missed just by noodling around. I've really appreciated having the judges listen to and comment on all the tracks submitted and it's been a great opportunity to progress. Thanks again!
REAL nice!
That is a nice catchy song! I loved the relaxed groove, and like Mark, I thought the way you switched it up on the IV chord of the head the 2nd time around really worked. I also really liked the verse that starts around 1:15. I dug how you start it on the 2nd beat and I also dug the continuity in the way you handled the IV chord and the V in that verse. You tied it together like a mature player. Well conceived and well executed. Excellent job.
Thanks
Thanks, Rick! Great to have you listen to all our tracks - and your DVD and videos here helped me a lot. Thanks again!
inventive melodic ideas
Solid playing and good melody here! I like the change on second verse over the 4 chord. Terrific tone, great execution of ideas-I might have to steal some of these licks! Reminds me a bit of 70's Gary Smith. Nice use of tension at 1:40 on the 4 draw. I liked the growl too. Inventive Melodic Ideas!
Thanks
Thanks, Mark - it's real pleasure to have you guys judging the contest - and thanks too for your harp submissions. They really helped me put this together.
Groooovy...
The groove is beautifully sunny and the tone delightfull. What's your rig? You sound so round and fat. Feels like doing a siesta... Thanks for putting a beach in my ears.
Wow! Very cool groove! Like
Wow! Very cool groove! Like your textures and sound! :)
Growls
Forget to mention that I really dig the growls. I wish I could do that!
great stuff
This is great! Love the head, and each chorus is distinct and paints a picture. It never sounds like you're trying to show off just for the sake of showing off - everything fits and it grooves well. Good sound too. Love it!
Rhummmmba!
I was dancing to this one-nice to hear something a bit different. Great submission! I wish the sound of your hap was a little bit louder though so I could hear it a bit better-the head was great!
Carumba!!!
Head is very well established and interesting. You really create interest with some of those deep notes and with the way you vary the rhythmic patterns from chorus to chorus. Fun listen!!
Palm trees and sunny beaches
Great head, I really like your first chorus when you focus on the 2nd hole, some powerful notes you're hitting. But every chorus is equally interesting (octaves, growls etc.). You created some great tension when you played the 2-5 draw interval and you tried to bend to 2 hole. That's hard to do.
You really captured the groove : I could see palm trees, sunny beaches and a bartender fixing me a maraschino cocktail.
Snap, crackle and POP....Dave
Snap, crackle and POP....Dave was gunna steal a few of my licks - I think I'm going to steal that whole friggin song. You really captured the essence of Dave's lessons in that tune. I was listening to James Harman doing a Rhumba version today on my Ipod, what a cool groove to play harp with! This competion is heating up fo sho...
JC special
This instrumental has your name all over it, tasty licks and tasteful phrasing throughout. Well thought out progression and a great composition. The 4 draw on chorus 3 really stands out and always good to hear a rhumba groove! Fandabidozie..!
