Should I be reviewing old material?
Happy New Year, David!
Should I be reviewing old material?
Each level in the LOA program is taking several months to complete. I have a "divide and conquer" mentality. I will first work excusively on one section--like the theory or accompaniment-- and then move on to other sections when I've mastered it. When I started LOA2's material, I started with the Accompaniment and Solo Playing and was able to master the concepts and techniques fairly quickly. Weeks later, I was graduated up to the next level and started looking at the next step of Accompaniment and Solo Playing, but the previous ideas were not fresh in my head anymore (because it was 1-2 months since I really played any of it).
As I advance further, this could become more of an issue. Should I set aside some time to review? Maybe a day a week?
Or is my problem the way that I approach the LOA material? Instead of "Divide and Conquer", should I work on a little bit of everything everyday?
Or maybe it is actually not a problem at all, since your curriculum seems designed to review old material and circle back on itself.
Thanks,
Marc
Happy New Year to you as well. I think your approach is just fine. Yes, I do recommend you play your study songs once a week… it's good to have those on the tip of your tongue when someone says, "play something for me!" Make a playlist... hit play… and have a good time until the list is up. The other material is not as important, unless it's something you're really drilling (like V-IV-I Licks in Improvising Study 4).
