Sight reading
Hey David,
You mentioned if we wanted to... when learning the first study song "Walk With Me" would be an excellent opportunity to train us in sight reading..... Now I'm going over your video lesson and doing well enough... and I have the music score open..... to learn sight reading should I be going off of the score only.... like learn the song as I can to your mp3 and score and then go back to your video lessons or is there another way I am missing..... I appreciate your time on this as to me it seems a great skill to have to be able to play any score simply by sight.... maybe I'm missing the point of blues harmonica but blues isn't the only sound the harmonica makes sooooo,,,, could you let me know how to go about sight learning a little more in depth....
Thanks,
ColinBlues
Sure... happy to help. The best way to go about this is to white-out the harmonica tab... requiring you to read. Use a pencil at first... identifying the notes (relative to a C Harmonica in 2nd Position) on the staff (what their pitches are)... of which you'll erase later. Have a C Harmonica note layout handy as reference.
This will be slow-going at first, but due to the fact that I write all of my music in C Score (it doesn't matter what harp you have in your hand... we always read as if we have a C Harmonica in our hands).
Yes, it does help to identify the pitches you're playing on the harmonica... it reveals much about how the harmonica works in relation to the music. Patterns also appear for you when you do this.
You're probably already doing this, but make sure to study Music Theory Study 1.
