soldering mic leads
G'day Fritz,
recenly i obtained a couple of mic leads with switchcraft screw on connections...
1 of them didnt make it through the first jam session. investigation revealed the centre wire had broken off the dot of solder on the back of the disc. i am puzzled about how to reattach it. the attachment point is about 20mm down a barrel 8mm diameter. i can see 2 or 3 strands of wire protruding from the blob of solder down there, so it appears there is a way to do it...although it evidently wasn't a very strong connection! can you shine the spotlight of your knowledge on this for me please?
Dave
YO DAVE!
Glad you found a fix. The SWITCHCRAFT 2501MP / 2501F, sometimes called "Amphenol connectors" (tho AMPHENOL is a brand, not a functional description) are some of the tuffest, most positive connectors to ever hook-up a harpmic. Problem is, both the male and female components are a pain-in-the-ass to deal with for the uninitiated. I like to cut a channel into the inner barrel of the connector and solder the ground directly to it. The center conductor needs to be stripped back with extra copper enough to make at least two folds to pop thru the center eyelet. For the cable end, the biggest problem is anchoring the ground / shield to the strain relief spring which is then held in place by the set screw in the body of the connector. Extra solder on the spring will help... More trix on the way...
its ok Fritz, i worked it out
