Temperament Tuning References: Cleartune App
Hi Kinya,
Please confirm if I have correctly interpreted the following:
Harpsmith = Cleartune App (Android)
12 TET = Equal Temperament
Compromised Just = Amost Equal (under Well-Tempered)
Just Intonation = Standard Just (under Pythagorean/Just)
Cheers Julian
Hello Julian
You could lead the class for me this April ;o)
Hello Kinya,
When tuning my C harp first hole Cnote it must be so out of tune it is showing B on my cleartune app. How do you raise it back to a C without ruining yur reeds?
ZZ
Hello ZZ
Hmmm ... I'm a little suspicious that the position of your tongue is encouraging the #1 blow reed to go flat. Let's check ...
If you are proficient at playing octaves, please try the following:
- With your chromatic tuner set at 442hz, tongue block blow only the 4+ reed. This should display around 0~2+ cents. This will be the "reference" reed for that particular note (e.g. C on a C harmonica, A on an A harmonica, etc.). Now,
- tongue block blow notes 1+ and 4+ at the same time (mouth over four holes, tongue blocks holes 2 and 3). If the octave sound steady, meaning there are no beats or quivers--your #1 blow reed is actually in tune. It was your tongue flattening the pitch ;o(
- Remember David Barrett's mantra, "Then tongue is all things good and evil when playing the harmonica". This is why I strongly recommend investing in the Dick Sjoberg HARP TUNER. The HT is essentially a vaccum table which enables you check all twenty reeds, without the tongue confoluting the pitch.
Let us know what you had discovered.
Your Harpsmith, Kinya
Hi Kinya, OK I think I have figured what's going on.
The ET/12TET is the root of the notes ie "0". Any other reference eg CJ, JI, etc are simply industry terms for tuning references where adjustments with regards to flattening (-) or sharpening (+) notes have been generally accepted.
