theory question
Hi David. The one of the scale, the root note, sounds good with any of the I, IV or V chords in a typical blues progression. Why does the one of the scale sound good with the V chord? It's the 4th of the V chord, which would seem to be dissonant with the 3rd of the chord. When I stick that C into a G chord on the piano it sounds terrible. Even if I play the next C above the G chord, making it the 11th, it sounds dissonant. But on Blues for Paul DeLay, for example, in the second chorus, you play the 3-6 octave over the V chord and it sounds sweet. Is that just the way it is?
Hello willblatner.
You're right, the root note of the key does not sound good on the V (with exception to some phrasing that may be going on... think Chorus Forms).
In chorus two of Blues For Paul deLay, I don't see the 3-6 octave on the V chord... I see 1+-4+ octave on the V chord, which is the flat-7th of the chord. Clarify for me please. Thanks.
