tiny volume on draws
Hello,
I just started the course a few days ago. I've been playing for 6 months using the pucker technique. Now I am trying to learn tongue blocking. After a few frustrating days I can usually get clean single notes. However the volume on my draw notes when tongue blocking is miniscule. With the pucker I can get a full volume on the draw. But when I play the same note with tongue blocking it is really quiet. I keep trying different positions of my tonge and lips but I still can't seem to get any volume. I am focusing on relaxing my mouth, throat, and tongue, but I have not been able to figure out the problem.
Thaks for any help or suggestions.
Hello vid wes. Something is constricting the air. Common issues would be...
1) Pushing to hard on the face of the harmonica with your tongue (which causes the tongue to squish into the hole) and tongue to raise.
2) The back of your tongue is humped up (check this with a mirror... harmonica out of your mouth). You want that tongue low.
3) Because it's happening on the draw (draws are tougher than blows in general, but...), it's possible that your mouth is too small, allowing the inhaling to suck your mouth shut, so experimenting with smiling and using a slight yawn, may do the trick to open you up enough to keep the flesh of your mouth from constricting when drawing.
Give these things a try and let me know.
