Tips needed LOA 5 Assignment 3
Im starting on the "write you own instrumental" assignment 3 and sure would appreciate some tips from those who have completed this. How did you start this? Did you pick out a track first and then matched licks to it or the other way around? what worked and what did not? If you had to do it again what would you do differently? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark
I you have access to the Artist Studies "Shakey's Shuffle" is a fun way to come up with an instrumental. Also Ryan Walker in the contributor section is the intermediate plater that has his lessons with David. There's some video of how he went about it. It's really good to watch David in a Private lesson.
Hi Mark.
I have started this exercise too and find it challenging. My advice in starting is to find a jam track you feel comfortable jamming to. I chose Temperature as one of David's suggestions. I played it over and over until I discovered a lick I was playing that sounded ok and I could repeat. Make sure you write it down. Then try to play that lick in the chorus forms. Although I have not completed the process yet, using this method I have 6 licks now. My challenge now is to decide which one to play in which form and what will the head end up being. To add another suggestion I played the first 2 licks for a friends input and also submitted the written first 2 licks to David for his input to help move forward.
The best advice I received from a friend was to simply start the process. My mental block and anguish was in the way of progress. Much like playing at a jam on stage for the first time. One foot forward.....
