Tongue blocking for the lip purser
Dave, i'm very excited to get going in your course… I've been playing for about six months, exclusively a lip purser… i'm hitting the intermediate stage of my playing, and can play several blues melodies and solos along with 12 bar blues improvs...I practice a couple of hours a day, as I am a 25 year keyboard player and want to add the Harmonica to my set… My first question is really very simple and maybe obvious… I am just starting to ton gus block and wanting to know:
does the tongue change positions for the upper register?… In other words do you slide the tongue to the right to play seven or eight hole… Or is the tongue consistently blocking on the left side for all of the single notes?… Thanks and looking forward to the course
I'm happy to help curry... best wishes on your studies.
Hello Curryjb, welcome to the site. Your tongue position does not change. The default way of playing is to have your lips over four holes, blocking the three holes to the left. It's done this way for holes 4 through 10. When playing hole 3, you'll tongue block holes 1 and 2, plus some comb to the left. When playing hole 2 you'll block hole 1 and comb to the left. For you, since you come from a puckering background, you'll pucker hole 1.
