Tongue Blocking question
Mr Barrett,
Howdy, I recently joined you site after checking out the previews and hearing some good things. Basically trying to just make my playing better. In particular I was interested in the tongue blocking lessons as I have until hopefully in the not to distant future been playing via lip pursing only.
My question is this, when I place my harp into position to play I only seem to be able to clock 2 holes and not 3. In other worse I can get a good note out of the say the 3 blow but cannot seem to get enough blocked and my mouth into position to get the 4 blow. I get decent tone out of the 3 blow but that is obviously not quite right :)
I am thinking this is something I am not quite getting right, Either not using the correct part of the tongue or do not have the harp in quite the right position. Some advice on what I might not be doing would be greatly appreciated :)
thanks,
ed
Hey Ed. This is a common issue. Place more harmonica in your mouth and use more of the top of the tongue (it's wider and can cover more holes easier). Another option is to work on octaves first, which requires you to be over four holes, and then work on single-note tongue blocking... I do this with some of my private students and it works out well. Another option is to use three holes for right now and then when your octave studies come up you can open things up a bit.
