Tongue blocking..and switching..
Hi David and thanks again for the review of my first submission - Temperature.
Since then I have been digging into the Forums and videos and I am convinced that I need to accept some pain by moving from pucker where I am comfortable to TBing. I can bend all reeds puckered accept for holding a stepped 3 draw reliably. I attempted my first TB bend this evening on A Harp 6 draw and actually got it. It wasn't very controlled, and I kept going through the bend at first but a few more tries I held it for a few seconds so I was very happy. If I went straight away and tried the TB bend now I would fail but I didn't really think about what was happening in my mouth (although I had watched the vids), I just played the bend puckered first to get the sound and then attempted the TB and that seems to work for me. Hopefully I can get the others in using this method as well.. perhaps it might also help someone else making the transition.
Any way the question I do have is around when to using the tongue switch. Do you only block the left side on hole 1? When I play the entire Temperature tongue blocked I get my tongue tied up on some licks. Simple example take 2nd Chorus 9-12 bar where you are playing hole 1 and then hole 2. Playing this pucked was smooth but switching the tongue from right to left is not. Is there times like this that you would recommend playing the 2 hole from the left side? Hope this makes sense.
Thanks, Mark
Yes, your question makes sense. Once you get comfortable with TB'ing the 1, you can pretty much do it 100% of the time. You may find some presentation of the 1 (such as double or triple tonguing) where you switch, but it just gets down to what you're comfortable with. Tongue switching is commonly just done on the 1, but some styles, such as pre-war and country blues (like Joe Filisko plays), use it a lot... all over the range of the harmonica.
