Tongue position when playing
Hello David, first post and brand new to the instrument, so apologies if this has been asked many times before!
When tongue blocking, should the tip of the tongue be against the back of the bottom teeth with the blade/top reaching up and over the teeth to meet the harmonica?
Similar question for breathing through the harmonica - should the tongue be resting on the floor of the mouth with the tip against the back of the lower teeth or should the tip be resting on top of the lower teeth?
Finally, i'm not 100% sure I am doing the closed nose technique properly as I don't feel like I am getting as full a breath as i'd like. I am sounding almost like Darth Vader whilst breathing and it feels a bit like how you would snore with your mouth open when sleeping with a cold - does that sound right?!
Really enjoying the site.
Best,
David
Welcome to the site David. The tip of the tongue will be slightly beyond the lower teeth and under the harmonica (if you play a Marine Band-style harmonica, then you'll probably feel the lower reed plate).
For "breathing through the harmonica," the tongue position remains the same as I just stated (though do keep in mind that the middle and back of the tongue should be lowered for good tone).
In regards to Darth. It sounds like you're vocalizing and closing your throat. Open that throat.. think warm, unrestricted air.
I recommend you watch Hob's opening lessons, we put a lot of time into embouchure.
Glad you're enjoying the site. Best wishes on your studies.
