Hi Winslow,
I am new to BH and I don't have a musical background. I am currently working my way through the LOA 1 Coursework.
Perhaps I am getting ahead of myself but I want to try to figure out how to play some of the music I listen to. Below is a link to the Rolling Stones version of Hate To See You Go.

My problem is I don't know where to start because I don't know what key the song is in. Is that something you can tell just by listening to the song?
I want to try this song because it seems like there are some simple riffs there that I have a chance of being able to play.
Do you think it is an efficient way to spend extra practice time for someone just starting out to try to figure out riffs, or should I just focus on the LOA 1 Coursework?
By the way, I am using Blues Harmonica for Dummies in addition to my BH resources. I enjoy your book very much. Thanks for your time.
John
Great tune, originally recorded by Little Walter (here in the extended version that's a bit longer than te original release):

While the LOA gives you a highly structured course of learning expertly tailored to give you what you need when you need it, there's nothing wrong with grabbing hold of what inspires you. It can spark new connections and insights, although it can also plunge you over your head in deep water - and then you learn to swim.
Knowing the key of a song by hearing it is a bt mysterious. I can intuitively hear what the home note of a song is, but then I have to identify it by finding it on a musical instrument - picking up a harp, plunking on a keyboard, or even picking up a landline telephone (the US dial tone is an F, or at least close enough for a reference).
But how do I intuit the key? Can't say for sure, but the note you hear most often is likely to be it - listen for it in the vocals, the main solo instrument, and the bass.
Glad you're liking Blues Harmonica For Dummies!
