Trumpet sound on the Temperature track
Hi David.
I hope you don’t mind me asking a couple of newbie questions regarding the sound of the harp on the Temperature track. When I listen to this Jam track the harp sounds a little like a trumpet. How do you get this effect? I can’t detect any delay or reverb, is that correct or are my ears deceiving me? Is it cupping a mic through an amp or do you play strait into a mic?
This question also makes me curious about the different types of harp sounds found on recordings and it would be great if you could quickly describe if it’s just a style of playing or if it typically also includes some effects such as delay, reverb, distortion etc. I can think of four types of harp sounds:Natural, Dirty south blues, Chicago blues, and Electric.
Thanks
All questions are welcome! In this recording I'm playing through a tube amp, with delay and a little bit of reverb, holding a bullet mic... the standard blues harmonica player's rig. I recommend you look at the lessons in the Equipment section on "Amps: What You Need To Know" and "Mics: What You Need To Know." The other way of playing is in front of a vocal microphone (what we call acoustic). That's it... just two... but when playing through an amp you can use a setup that gets a very clean sound to very distorted... it all depends on the mic/amp combo.
