Tunning a chromatic
Sun, 08/11/2024 - 13:11
Hello Kinya,
Hello Kinya!
Can you please write me if you have any tips for tunning a chromatic?
For example should I use 440 or 442HZ like on the diatonic?
And: Should I tune all to 0c or is there some recipe?
Thanks!
Angel

Tuning Chromatic Harmonica
Checking in with you Angel,
How did your tuning operation go with your Chromatic?
Your HARPSMITH, Kinya
Hi Angel,
Yes & Yes
Generally speaking, the Chromatic harmonica--with it's reed architecture and the use of windsavers (valves), does not require the intensity of breath pressure found with the diatonic harmonica (i.e. two reeds in the same chamber without valves).
This means the Chromatic harmonica will hold it's tuning better than it's diatonic counterpart, making it unnecessary to tune the harmonica SHARP, like we do with the diatonic harmonica @442~444Hz.
So my recommendation is not to play your Chromatic harmonica hard, and to calibrate your Tuner to 441Hz.
Tune your reeds to 0 (zero) 12 Tone Equal Temperament
