The un-tunable reed story
Hello Kinya,
I have been strugling to tune one of my harps. so I need your advice on what approach I could use to determine the issue.
The problem I have experienced is with Octave tunning a C harp. Specificaly the 7 blow.
Even though I have the 4 and 7 blow tuned at plecisely 0C the octave keeps beeting, so I have tried increasing breath strenght trying to figure out if I should tune the 7 blow up or down...I have done this so many times and still the reeds seem to go spontaneously in and out of sync nomater how hard I try. I have the same issue with the 7-10 octave so I have narrowed down the problem to the 7 blow...but what exactly can be wrong with the 7 blow?? It does not seem going flat permanently so it can't be worn off...
I have tuned a few of my harps already...sure they will go out of tune with time, but this one I could never get in tune.
Would you have any suggestions to what I can be looking at?
Thanks!
Hi Angel, good to hear from you.
It appears that you had checked off all the boxes for troubleshooting, especially comparing your breath (and embouchure) with other (Make, Model) harmonicas of the same key.
BLOW reeds are particularly troublesome, because our breath's aspiration, condensation, saliva and temperature impact (weigh down) the stability of the tuning.
My best practices are:
Having laid all this "stuff" out for you--at the end of the day--finding a consistently, perfectly tuned harmonica is sort like hunting down an unicorn, you will spend more time chasing and less time enjoying your music ;o)
