The V4 Jam

Audio:

This recording has an interesting story. My pops gave me my first harmonica and told me "Learn how to bend a note and come see me". That was my first and only lesson from him. Now years later my family, which is spread all over the country, gets together very rarely. This recording happen on a day when my uncle, father, and younger cousin happen to all be in the same room. My dad, who just recently started practicing guitar again after 30 years, had his guitar and asked me if I wanted to play some music. My uncle grabbed my guitar and to my surprise he stared playing some chords. I didn't even know he could play guitar. Turns out he was playing the only three chords he knew. My dad joined in and there we were, all playing music. It gave me a chance to solo and practice my skills as a harmonica instrumentalist. It was real cool moment for me. That being said feel free to offer your critique of my playing, I can take it.

Sorry about the quality of the audio. It was ripped from video.

Nice opening feel... some nice playing throughout... I like the dynamic change at 1:58. Modal blues provides a challenging foundation to showcase songwriting elements. Because of this it won't score highly in this competition, but it was no doubt a fun track to listen to, thanks for the submission!

This one takes me way Back!

This one takes me way back...to some Haight-Ashbury crash pad in the 1960s! The piece has a lot of spirit, but not much form or direction. You demonstrate a focused tone at times and I do like the way you sometimes transition to the 3 blow after the 2 draw. If you had been around back in the day, you would have been a king among the hippy harpsters! That kind of playing would've served you well on the free love circuit!

Feels like a jam to me. The playing is okay but would really benefit tone-wise from tongue blocking. It's kinda the same lick being repeated over and over. Got a bit of a Sonny Terry vibe to it.

Thanks Mark!

Thanks for your review Mark. I seem to always walk away from songs or solos thinking what I could have done differently. What I would have added or subtracted. I know a large majority of the musicians I play with do the same. I wonder, do most professionals still do this? The Sonny Terry feel wasn't intentional, must be from osmosis of listening to him that it came through.

Nice 'live' action feel that really shows what jamming is all about. Good warbles and lively rhythmic melody lines. Good on yah!!

Yeah man you put your heart

Yeah man you put your heart and soul into that song, you captured a great instrumental - the playing sounded free and loose, great breathing control and use of dynamics...I love that style of harp playin - I need to practice more of it, there is so much to learn...What an amazing little instrument!

Well done!

Well done Nick. The feeling you were putting into your playing comes across strong and I bet everyone there was really digging it. If anything, I think it's lacking a bit in terms of structure but then I don't think that was the point of your jam. Good wailing on the harp and as you say, a cool moment for you and great to have it captured on audio!

Cool track - sounds like you

Cool track - sounds like you were really in the zone. There's some Sonny Terry-sounding playing here, especially on the 4 draw bends, which is always cool to hear.
