VTG Voice of Music Bullet Microphone

Hi Fritz,
I recently purchased a VTG Voice of Music Bullet Microphone. It's really a great mic, however there is one flaw- when you hold it, the mic picks up any movement along the outer shell of it. Example: ring rubbing against it etc...
Is that just a charectoristic of an old mic? or does some repair need to be made? maybe in internal grommet?
Thought I would ask.
Thanks,
~R
Hello ROSZELL,
Without knowing the intimacies of your particular mic's innards I can give some plausible causes, having nothing to do with its possible contact with Homeland Security or Politicians looking to gain inside info on an opponent...
Very often what passes for internal isolation materials for the element -if there was any to begin with- will dry with age and lose elasticity. Thus, it becomes a CONDUCTOR of the very culprit it was placed there to safeguard its element from: HANDLING NOISE, which is likely what you're experiencing. IT AIN'T FAIR! The solution is to gain entry to the mic's internals, appraise if improved gasketing and/or insulation in the shell's cavity would be beneficial, and apply accordingly. Ready-made gaskets, silicon, and/or rubberized tape (3M 130C) could prove helpful....
The other probability is that a principal component -often the cable- has become "MICROPHONIC". Yeah, I know it seems redundant to say that. However, there are instances when a mic's cable and related wiring will actually transduce physical motion/impact/handling into sonic energy. I know, YOU thought it was haunted! Before you dial-up Dionne Warwick's psychic pals, try changing the involved wires/wiring -or were you getting used to those taxi calls from Malta?
