What makes a given rhythm unique?
Hello David
I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction for doing some background reading/research into what goes into distinguishing the different rhythms commonly used in blues music - shuffle, swing, rumba etc.
I'm at the stage now where I can "feel" the beat/rhythm of the 12-bar blues and play along (most of the time) without having to count every single beat, and can hear that the rhythms are different, but if I listen to a backing track or any given blues song without looking, I have no idea which of the above it is.
I've listened to all these different rhythms my whole life and never known how to distinguish one from the other. I think the time has come for me to get a grip of this.
Thank you
Joel
Sorry for interfering, but maybe Performance Training Study 2 - Groove would be a good start? It certainly has a lot of information on groove. Did you already watch that one, Joel?
Thanks mmarquez... I totally forgot about that one... good call!
Joel:
David and mmarquez have nailed it. It does not matter that you're not yet confident enough to "perform." That'll come with time and experience. But as you've probably already figured out, the Performance Training Study 2 - Groove series of videos is a real winner. For anyone who loves music and especially blues.
And that's due in large part to the fellow musicians that David enlisted. With Rusty Zinn, RW Grigsby and Marty Dodgon, it doesn't get much better.
Of course, when each of those four guys looks at those over-a-decade-ago videos, each probably wishes he still looked like that! Tho' they're still doing all right. Rusty was here in Sacramento not that long ago, and is always amazing, and I'm lucky to get to hear RW pretty regularly, as he's a musical neighbor and friend here.
Hello Joel. To my knowledge, no such instruction exists, but I did a series of very detailed Zoom workshops on the subject. I'll send you an email offline to give you the details.
