wireless for acoustic
Hi Fritz,
I expect a question about wireless is considered in poor taste for a mic expert but i respect your opinion.
I have a Sonny Jr1 and a Kendrick 5W practice amp. Sonny sent me a Turner +2 bullet with a controlled magnetic element. I think that will probably work for my blues work..with a tight cup.
It would be nice to have another easier to use mic...and i have a Hohner Hoodoo wirelss mic too.
What do you think about the Hoodoo with these amps?
Is there something that is much better? The Hoodoo is basically a lavalier tuned for harp i think.
Anything you know of specifically that could go wireless just for convienience sake?
Handheld is the key...no stands.
Thank you!
Steve
I'm back -and I'm proud! And thanks, David, for the pinch-hit. OK Steve, You've opened the glove compartment in the Pandora's Boxmobile: THE WIRELESS FACTOR. But first, a word from our friends, the microphones... As per the application and amps you've indicated, I'll second David's nomination of the CM-equipped TURNER as the Urban Assault weapon of choice. In this case, getting the results you seek simpler / faster = player satisfaction. Yes, I've seen and heard the HOODOO system and recognize the potential as a useful tool. That said, when the job calls for a hammer, reach for a hammer...
As for the subject of THE WIRELESS FACTOR, the variety and price range has expanded in all directions over the past decade. The transceivers perform better with fewer problems. Dependability goes a long way when you're doing a spacewalk with no tether.
At the upper end, the typical combo seen for critical live & broadcast applications would be a NEUMANN mic capsule (such as the TLM 105) coupled with a SENNEISER EW series wireless system. I bet you don't want to spend that kind of money... SENNHEISER, E-V, SHURE, SAMSON, NADY, AUDIO-TECHNICA, AKG, LINE 6 have all done wireless packages -I even have an old TELEX system around here somewhere (I think it runs on coal). After all is said and done, I'd first opt for the SHURE PGX. It's the least expensive among the ULX, SLX, and PGX SHURE lines. As you would be furnishing your own mic/signal and won't be needing the unified handmic/transmitter combo, you'll be looking at the "components" lists that are offered...
As the wireless system itself introduces another set of controls into the audio chain (this is getting complicated), it IS possible to utilize these components to modify your sound along the way -should you wish to do so.
But that's a different glove compartment...
Fritz is still on the road from being at my place for taping. I'll step in for my thoughts though. I recommend you use a guitar wireless with your Turner (you may need to make a custom cable. Though, if you have a screw-on output connector you can use an adapter that goes to 1/4" and just plug in the guitar wireless chord). Check out different wireless systems... you don't want the chord too short (a mic at your face is farther away than a guitarist's jack on the guitar). Your CM is a better match than the Hoodoo.
